New York State will pay $750,000 to a former doctor at the Albion Correctional Facility to settle her 11-year old claims of race discrimination.

The suit by Dr. Gwendolyn Cole-Hoover, an African-American, accused several nurses and supervisors at Albion of creating a racially hostile workplace and improperly disciplining her on several occasions.

“She was constantly mistreated,” Prathima C. Reddy, Dr. Cole-Hoover’s lawyer, said Tuesday.

Under the settlement, approved by U.S. Magistrate Judge Jeremiah J. McCarthy, the state will pay $389,084 to Dr. Cole-Hoover and set aside the balance until a dispute over attorney fees is resolved.
